Less is more: Emissions reduced by 57 tons of CO2

In 2018, our various activities in Austria enabled us to save the environment around 57 tonnes of the greenhouse gas CO2. In this way, we are living up to our responsibility for climate protection. SANHA has been a member of the Austrian Plastics Recycling Working Group ÖAKR e.V. since 2017.

The ÖAKR has existed since 1991 as a comprehensive collection system for used pipes, fittings and plastic pipe residues arising during laying. At the same time, Austria's leading plastic pipe manufacturers voluntarily complied with the wish of the Austrian National Council to create collection and recycling systems for durable PVC building products. With this responsible step, the ÖAKR members are making an important contribution to the practical implementation of the principle of a sustainable economy.

"As one of the leading pipe manufacturers in Europe, our ÖAKR membership clearly demonstrates that we take our social responsibility for the environment and sustainability seriously," emphasises Sven Kalbitzer, Team Leader Marketing at SANHA GmbH & Co. KG. SANHA produces or sells pipes (Multifit pipes or press and plug-in fittings 3fit) made of PE-RT and PEXc as well as the sound-absorbing house drainage system MASTER 3 PLUS* made of PP-CO.

The member companies finance the system in its entirety. In addition, the working group, which includes representatives of the member companies and the OFI (Austrian Research Institute for Chemistry and Technology), is responsible for a continuous improvement process.  

ÖAKR's contributions to sustainability 

Since the beginning of the ÖAKR's activities in 1991 to 2018, more than 22,000 tonnes of material have been collected and recycled in an environmentally sound manner. Within the scope of the study "Plastic pipe recycling: ÖAKR contributions to sustainability 1991 - 2016", denkstatt GmbH calculated the savings with regard to CO2 and primary energy. During this period, approx. 19,600 tons of CO2 were avoided, which corresponds to approx. 92 million passenger car kilometres. The energy saving of approx. 890,000 gigajoules corresponds to the annual energy expenditure for hot water generation for approx. 340,000 people. With the collection of 1,344 tons in 2016, approx. 630 tons of CO2 and approx. 43,400 gigajoules of energy could be saved.
